This is the Service uniform worn in seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation.Ranks
The charts below depict the rank pins worn on the collar of the uniform to denote rank and note placement of the appropriate designations. The ranks are shown with each division where such rank could be appropriate. Line Officers
For all Line Officers, pips are to be worn on the right side of the collar, vertically centered between the parallel top and bottom edges, with the first pip placed roughly 1/2″ to 3/4″ away from the center edge of the collar, with 1/8″ between pips moving toward the side of the neck from the front. If the rank called for requires a black/hollow pip, that pip is to be placed last in the chain.

Due to changing information presented in early seasons of TNG and a lack of variety in enlisted ranks on screen, it is difficult to tell for sure what ranks are properly used for enlisted crew. The only rank that is definitively known is that of “Crewman”, which bears an unadorned collar without rank insignia.
