The USS Volta (named for Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta [18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827], the Italian physicist known for the invention of the battery in the 1800s) had just returned from her first five year mission and docked at Starbase 375 near the Bajor System for a refit that would equip the vessel with a prototype navigational system and Warp drive that would be capable of acheiving near Warp 10 speeds to assist her in the future mission of helping map the Gamma Quadrant.

After the original Captain’s retirement ceremony shortly after reaching Starbase 375, Commander Patrick Faraci was promoted to Captain, and quickly elevated Chief Science Officer LCDR Mario Gaudet to the position of First Officer.

The Volta’s crew of 141 is mainly made up of engineers and scientists to assist in testing the new technologies that the starship boasts.
